What is ads.txt?
Ads.txt (Authorized Digital Sellers) is an IAB Tech Lab initiative that helps prevent unauthorized inventory sales. Publishers host an ads.txt file at their domain root to declare which companies are authorized to sell their ad inventory.
A properly configured ads.txt file helps buyers verify that the inventory they purchase is legitimate, reducing ad fraud and domain spoofing. Missing or misconfigured entries can result in lost revenue as buyers may refuse to bid on unauthorized inventory.
Common issues this tool detects:
- Missing
contact=andownerdomain=declarations - Invalid relationship type (must be DIRECT or RESELLER)
- Malformed entry lines with incorrect formatting
- Duplicate entries that may confuse buyers
- Invalid domain formats and empty account IDs
